For its Champions for Children match-funding campaign, the charity needed an engaging film that would communicate the realities faced by young people and encourage corporate supporters and donors to help fund vital services.
These accounts were carefully shaped into a voiceover script and performed by young actors, protecting the identities of the children while ensuring their real experiences remained at the heart of the film.
With no established animation style to follow, we developed several creative concepts before establishing a bright, hand-drawn aesthetic inspired by children’s illustrations. The animation depicted recognisable London environments and the different ways charities provide support, while animated infographics communicated the scale and severity of child poverty across the capital.
The result balanced a difficult subject with warmth and hope, making the film accessible without diminishing the realities it explored.

Combining illustrated stories, authentic testimony from young people, compelling statistics and examples of practical support, the film explained the realities of child poverty and demonstrated the difference frontline charities can make.
Animation allowed us to bring children’s experiences sensitively to life without compromising anyone’s privacy. The finished film gave The Childhood Trust a powerful fundraising asset that helped audiences understand both the scale of the problem and the tangible difference their donations could make, inspiring greater corporate support for its network of frontline organisations.
